About us
The aim of MAGNETS
MAGNETS is a Horizon Europe EDCTP3-funded initiative offering 10 two-year, fully funded Master's-level fellowships to early- and mid-career researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fellows will receive structured training in malaria genomic epidemiology and biostatistics, embedded within ongoing research at four host African institutions.
MAGNETS is a consortium of six institutions: Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM, Mozambique), Infectious Disease Research Collaboration (IDRC, Uganda), National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) through Wits Health Consortium (WHC, South Africa), Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI, Ethiopia), ISGlobal (Spain), and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF, USA).

Training the next generation of malaria researchers
Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding how the parasite spreads and changes can help researchers and malaria control programmes make better-informed decisions.
MAGNETS — the Malaria Genomic Epidemiology and Biostatistics Network for Enhancing Talent in Sub-Saharan Africa — helps build the skills needed to turn complex malaria data into useful public health knowledge. Through fully funded Master's-level fellowships, mentoring and hands-on research, the project supports emerging researchers working to improve malaria surveillance and control.

Build essential skills
Fellows undertake Master's-level training in malaria genomic epidemiology and biostatistics, learning how genetic and health data can help answer important questions about malaria.
Put knowledge into practice
Based at African research institutions, fellows work on real research projects with guidance from mentors, technical experts and an international network of collaborators.
Share knowledge and strengthen networks
Seminars, workshops and collaborative activities connect fellows across institutions and help them share findings with researchers, public health professionals and wider communities.
